Product Description
A simple lightweight solo tent for all seasons. The Quartz 1 comes with Kelty's patented FlyBoy anchoring system, which consists of a patch permanently affixed to the fly and a plastic clip that clamps the body, poles, and fly together into a single, unitized self-reinforcing structure (no more reaching up under the fly to attach velcro straps). Flyboy also accepts guylines to create a stronger and more stable structure. Also features Kelty Webforceâ¢. The "trusses" at each pole sleeve intersection guide the slightly pre-bent DAC Pressfit aluminum poles through the intersection, eliminating any independent movement of the poles, strengthening the structure. The "tendons" on the fly, which lock stakeout points to FlyBoys, prevent any stretch or movement under even the heaviest winds. The strong, long-lasting DAC poles have very tight tolerances that avoid gluing or crimping, both of which can result in failure or corrosion over time. NOTE: To ensure stability and 4-season performance, the Quartz is designed to have a more taut pitch than standard 3-season tents. It is important that the user fully run the poles through the pole sleeves before attempting to erect the tent. Failure to do so can cause undue stress on the poles and the pole sleeves. Also features Kelty's ArcEdge⢠floor which lifts floor construction seams off the ground to prevent water leakage.

4 out of 5 stars a great one-man four-season tent   December 28, 2008

I tested this tent in my back yard on a wild night. It first experienced 30 mph gusts, which it handled with very little flapping. Then, we moved to extremely heavy rain, again no problems. Finally, the rain turned to about four inches of wet snow: again, no problems.
The roof is a bit flat, and this COULD create problems in the heaviest snowfall--but I wouldn't mind shaking off heavy snow from time to time, in exchange for all that useful room inside!
Weight is a problem at close to five pounds, but this tent has: ROOM to sit up and stretch out; a sturdy traditional inner-tent-and rainfly design; a vestibule big enough to store gear and cook in; a nylon (not mesh) inner tent; and a good ventilation design for four season climate control.
The only strange feature is the four places where you are supposed to anchor the rainfly to the tent poles: I couldn't get that to work, but it didn't seem essential, and maybe with practice...

4 out of 5 stars Good Snow Tent   March 3, 2009

I recently used my Quartz 1 on a backpacking trip in the Sierras. It was a good weight for the hike (on snowshoes). The tent set up very easily and with the help of three Snow Anchors, was extremely stable. I was impressed with the lack of condensation buildup with the upper vent open. I didn't use a footprint and the bottom still stayed dry as well. The only possible disadvantage I saw for heavy snow was a natural bowl the top that could cause weight to build up. Overall I was very happy with the tent and definitely recommend it.
