MSR MIOX Purifier

| Description from Backcountry: | ||||||
| The MIOX is the most innovative addition to the water purifier
market in years. It's a super lightweight purifier that is no bigger
than a flashlight. It can purify large volumes of water and eliminates
the need for tons of pumping. Its requirements are a thimble of water, a
capful of table salt, and a couple of batteries. Voila, you have 4
liters of great tasting, purified water. Nearly effortless to operate,
the MIOX is excellent for group excursions, travel abroad, or any
situation that calls for large amounts of drinking water. The MIOX works
through an electrically-charged chemical-reaction that kills bacteria,
virus, and other contaminants. Batteries included. Bottom Line: No bigger than a small flashlight, and no more complicated to use, the MIOX is the easiest and most reliable device for purifying large volumes of water.
Reviews : The Miox is the best purifier that I've owned to date. The Miox system is amazing with how short the treatment time is. The only down side, but this usually applies to most purifiers, is that the big chunks of sand or dirt, whatever it might be. Just use some cheese cloth and you have clean, parasite free water. About the size of a Maglite, and weighing 3.5 ounces, the battery-powered Miox sends an electrical charge through salt water to create a chlorine-like solution that is stong enough to kill nasties like E. coli, giardia, cryptosporidium and anthrax. We found this to be a clever, somewhat convenient system, especially when treating larger volumes of water, and a viable alternative to traditional chemical treatments such as super chlorination and iodine tablets or solutions. didn't want to carry around a bulky water filter, so I picked up this nifty gadget. Very light and compact, and easy to use once you know how (learn before you go). The problem is, it gives your water a noticeable chlorine taste, which I had not expected. Not nearly as bad as iodine tablets (Blech!), but about the same as heavily treated city water (not so great). You could probably hide the taste with drink crystals I guess. I don't really want my water smelling like a swimming pool. I think maybe I'll pick up a filter instead. I relly like to MIOX purifier! I carry a camel pac when I go
backpacking. Since most of my hiking is done in the mountains the water
is crystal clear anyway. I fill my 3 liter camel pack at a stream
evening after getting out my cooking water. A click of a button and I
pour the oxidizer into my pack. Then next morning when I get up my water
is ready with almost no taste. A second advantage is cleaning my
clothes! I make a high concentration batch and pour it in a bag then
wash out my shirts and socks. A few shakes later and I have nice fresh
smelling clothes. No soap! I really like this purifier. It is fast and easy but the only drawback is the treated water smells/tastes a little like pool water. But other than that it is great. From MSR:
